چکیده

This paper summarizes the conclusions of two recently completed projects that examined the occurrence of the protozoan pathogen Cryptosporidium in wastewater streams, and the efficacy of ultraviolet (UV) light for treatment of wastewaters to control Cryptosporidium. A 15-month survey of Cryptosporidium oocyst occurrence was conducted at ten US wastewater treatment plants. Cryptosporidium oocysts were found in all wastewater matrices from raw sewage to tertiary effluents. However, low doses of UV radiation (3 mJ/cm2) from either low or medium pressure UV lamps were effective in achieving an inactivation level of greater than three logs for Cryptosporidium oocysts in wastewater effluent as measured by cell culture. No evidence of oocyst DNA repair was observed. While the occurrence of Cryptosporidium oocysts is common in wastewater effluents, UV is highly effective for oocyst inactivation in wastewater.

Synergies of UV Disinfection and Ozone in Water Treatment

Two case studies outlining the benefits of using ozone and UV are presented in this paper. They demonstrate the cost effectiveness and robustness that can be observed when the synergies of these two treatment alternatives are utilized. In the first study, ozone and UV disinfection were used at the Weber Basin Water Conservancy District’s Water Treatment Plant No. 3. The ozone system was designe...

Low-pressure UV inactivation and DNA repair potential of Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts.

Because Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts are very resistant to conventional water treatment processes, including chemical disinfection, we determined the kinetics and extent of their inactivation by monochromatic, low-pressure (LP), mercury vapor lamp UV radiation and their subsequent potential for DNA repair of UV damage. A UV collimated-beam apparatus was used to expose suspensions of purified ...

Photocatalytic water disinfection of Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia lamblia using a fibrous ceramic TiO(2) photocatalyst.

Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia lamblia are two of the most chlorine resistant microorganisms with notable adverse effects on humans. Our study shows that waters containing these two protozoa at low concentrations can be efficiently disinfected in continuous flow by using a commercial fibrous ceramic TiO(2) photocatalyst. The efficiency of the photocatalytic disinfection is largely enhanced ...

Occurrence of Cryptosporidium oocysts in US wastewaters.

Wastewater samples collected from ten wastewater facilities across the US were analyzed to determine the occurrence of indigenous Cryptosporidium oocysts using methods based on modifications of USEPA Method 1622. Wastewater facilities participating in this study ranged in size from 0.6 to 193 mgd average daily flow. A total of 289 wastewater samples were analyzed over a 15-month period. ColorSe...

Occurrence of Cryptosporidium spp. in Traditional Milk and Dairy Products Supplied in Yazd City, Central Iran

Background: Cryptosporidium is one of the most important agents of food-borne diseases with gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea in either livestock or humans. This protozoon can be transmitted to human through consuming contaminated raw milk and dairy products. The present study aimed to detect Cryptosporidium spp. in traditional raw cow milk, cream, and cheese consumed in Yazd city, Cen...
